A Deep Dive Into Jeep upgrades

Overview

Whether you're building your Jeep for slow crawling, desert racing, overlanding, or just for the look, upgrading your rig can massively boost its off road capability. However, most upgrades come with tradeoffs, especially when it comes to on road handling. In this post, I’ll break down the upgrades I made to our Jeep, how they improve off road performance, and what impact they have on-road. I'll use lots of pictures and drawings to explain why.

Bigger Tires

Off-Road Benefits:

• Ground Clearance: Larger diameter tires raise the vehicle's ride height, helping you clear obstacles like rocks and ruts.
• Traction: Bigger tires usually include more aggressive tread patterns and wider footprints, which help in loose terrain.
• Durability: Off-road tires are typically tougher.

On-Road Drawbacks:

• Fuel Economy Drops: Bigger tires are heavier and roll with more resistance, decreasing fuel economy.



• Speedometer Shift: Your speed and odometer readings will be inaccurate due to increased diameters.
• Noise and Vibration: Off-road tires often produce more road noise and can vibrate at highway speeds, which is annoying.

Aftermarket Wheels

Off-Road Benefits:

• Stronger Materials: Most aftermarket wheels are built tougher for rugged terrain.


• Increased Backspacing: Wider stance improves stability.

On-Road Drawbacks:

• More Unsprung Weight: Heavier wheels can hurt ride quality and acceleration.
• Potential Vibration: Especially if using true beadlocks (illegal for road use in some areas).

Lift Kit

Off-Road Benefits:

• Increased Clearance: Lets you run bigger tires and adds space between the chassis and trail for a greater breakover angle.
• Better Articulation: Lifts improve suspension travel and flexibility over uneven terrain.




• Approach/Departure Angles: Improves the angles at which you can climb or descend obstacles.

On-Road Drawbacks:

• Handling: A higher center of gravity will make the Jeep feel less stable in corners.
• Ride Quality: Can be stiffer or rougher depending on the kit, and can induce speed wobbles.

Aftermarket Front Bumper

Off-Road Benefits:

• Winch Mounting: Many aftermarket bumpers are winch-ready, a must for recovery.

• Improved Approach Angle: Shorter and higher profile bumpers improve clearance.
• Accessory Mounts: Lights, D-rings, and skid plates often bolt right on.

On-Road Drawbacks:

• Weight: Steel bumpers can add significant weight to the front end, which can affect handling and decrease fuel economy.

Aftermarket Rear Bumper

Off-Road Benefits:

• Better Departure Angle: Tucked rear bumpers reduce chances of dragging when descending.
• Tire Carrier Integration: Many rear bumpers support tires larger than stock, and remove stress from the tailgate, for easier use.
• Recovery Points: Built in shackles and tow points are more durable than factory tow points.

On-Road Drawbacks:

• Added Weight: Like the front, this can affect ride.
• License Plate Relocation: Some setups require moving your plate.
• Reduced Crumple Zone: Steel bumpers don’t absorb impact like plastic ones, which can make collisions more dangerous.

Low Profile Fender Flares

Off-Road Benefits:

• Tire Clearance: Gives your tires more room to travel vertically without rubbing, which is important with larger tires or big articulation.
• Better Visibility: Slim flares improve your sightlines when wheeling through tight trails.

On-Road Drawbacks:

• Less Coverage: May not meet local laws if tires stick out too far—leading to spray, debris, and legality issues.

Conclusion

Upgrading your Jeep is a balance between trail performance and driveability. Each upgrade improvements and compromises, so it’s important to match your build to your priorities. Ask yourself what you want out of your build, what you're willing to forgive, and go from there.
