Up Close with the Vegas Sphere

Vegas Sphere close-up

Introduction

Last week, I had the priveledge of visiting the Sphere in Las Vegas. I'd seen many videos and pictures of it online, but how it actually works took me by surprise. Join me for a deep dive on the Sphere up close.

First Impressions

The Las Vegas Sphere is over 360 feet tall, and more than 500 feet wide. It's huge. From far away, it looks like it's wrapped in a big LED screen. This isn't the case however. As you get closer, you'll notice that the outside is actually composed of LED "pucks" spaced pretty far apart.

Materials and Design

The Sphere's surface is composed of over a million LED pucks, each capable of displaying 256 million colors. Each puck has 48 individual LEDs, 16 of which are green, another 16 of which are red, and 16 blue. The pucks are spaced roughly a foot apart.

The pucks attach to rings on the Sphere's frame, which run parallel to the ground. Each puck has an attached heatsink that's roughly 2" thick.

What’s Inside?

The interior is just as cool as the outside. The seating bowl is overshadowed by a 16K resolution wraparound screen, a futuristic immersive audio system with beamforming speakers, and climate effects. Speakers are hidden behind the screens, and are able to target specific seats. Seats also have built in haptics like vibration. It really reminded me of IMAX, but on steroids.

Would I Recommend a Visit?

Absolutely. Even if you’re not catching a show, the Sphere is worth seeing. It's one of the most interesting venues on the planet, and screams 21st century.
